The elementary conducting course is for students who have little to no experience in conducting and who want to work on fundamental conducting techniques. It is suited for participants intending to lead a choir, ensemble or orchestra and those who are already doing so, but who wish to train their basic conducting skills

During the course participants work intensively in a small group on the basic conducting skills that are essential to any conductor. During the last session the participants will have the opportunity to bring the learned skills into practice with a group of experienced singers. Audio visual resources are used during the course. Some knowledge of music theory will be required for participation in these sessions.

Course objectives

• Conducting technique (start, cut-off, time signature, rhythms, fermata, dynamics, entries, sound character, changes in tempo, etc.)
• Gesticulation (communicating artistic directions to the ensemble)
• Body language (posture, pose)
• Repertoire preparation (how do I prepare a score?)
