Music theory II

Because 'music theory' has a wide scope and to make participation as easy as possible for you, our music theory courses are divided into two levels which can be followed separately, sequentially or together. Currently the levels Music Theory I and II are offered. Both courses can be followed in a number of time-blocks (see below).

Music Theory I is developed for participants who have no experience with music theory and who want to learn the theory basica in a limited amount of time.

Music Theory II is developed for participants who have come into limited contact with music theory, but who wish to expand their knowlegde. The entry level to participate in Music Theory II: You are capable of reading notes in treble clef and you know and recognize values (duration) of notes and simple time signatures.

Both courses cover virtually the same subjects, but Music Theory II will discuss the subject matter further. Participants work intensively in smaal groups (6 participants maximum). Our goal is not only to offer the music theory, but actually mastering the subject matter. During the course, participants will practice a lot, both orally and in writing.

Course objectives of 'Music theory II'

During the course: Music Theory II you will learn and practice the basic elements of musical notation. After the course you are capable of reading, recognizing and naming the basic elements of music notation:

• pitch of the musical notes in treble and bass clef.
• duration of the musical notes (also duplet, triplet)
• compound meter
• rhythmic exercises (also syncopations and ties)
• major and minor scales

  • First block: Thursday 10, 17, 24 and 31 March 2011, from 10:00 to 12:00 h.
  • Second block: Thursday 7, 14, 21 and 28 April 2011, from 10:00 to 12:00 h.
  • Third block: Thursday 12, 19, 26 May and 2 June 2011, from 10:00 to 12:00 h.
  • Fourth block: Thursday 9, 16, 23 and 30 June 2011, from 10:00 to 12:00 h.
